Just to show the wide range of results, here is my combo:
PG with JW Ultrabell
ATI flexplate and crank adapter
440 stock block
Power Master mini starter (normal size Denso style mini starter)
1/4" thick midplate between the block and JW bell housing.
Turbo style converter (Ultimate Converter) (PG has turbo input shaft); and 1/4" thick spacers between the converter lugs and flexplate (supplied by Ultimate Converters).

Starter spacer (two pieces) 0.537"
And the starter nose uses the JW nose extension too.

Part of that thickness is because the previous owner cut the midplate opening so 1/4" is just for the midplate thickness.
