To locate the stop drill hole: it should be (obviously) in line with the crack, but 1 drill diameter farther into the "good" material after the visible end of the crack. Sounds like anticipating the crack has an effect under the surface?

yes. this is the same for all materials that need crack repair.
a generous V on both sides of the crack [if possible] is also necessary for an adequate repair.
avoid grinding the weld as well. [unless absolutely necessary !]
