You guys should make it a requirement to join your club that members have some basic automotive knowledge. He’s going to be a reflection of your club when he’s out representing you. Somebody needs to school the young man.
Nobody mentioned the age of this person, just that he was a new member.
Age is no reflection of intelligence either. I have met smart and stupid of all ages. It is especially sad when it is an older person though.
Backing up slightly, you can't mandate intellect for new members. Part of the reason that some join a club is to learn. I was in a car club after I bought my Duster. I was 25 and didn't know much. I'm still learning. Aren't we all ?
