I'm a little surprised to read that the shaker base clears. Anybody know if the AAR/TA base clears?

No, the TA base doesn’t clear without some changes.
As you said, the problem is from the front fuel line fitting. The carbs came from the factory with that straight out nipple, which runs in to the front of the air cleaner base on the TA.
The way I solved it, after many attempts, was using this 90° Holley fitting. I don’t care for these because if there’s weight on them caused by fuel line or vibration of the fuel line up and down it can cause them to loosen, unless you install them very carefully. Even with this fitting I had a double gasket between the carbs and the air cleaner.
The first picture, under the air cleaner, is with one gasket. The second picture is the two gaskets. You can see it’s very close, and it gets closer when you tighten down the carb stud wing nuts.
