Six Pack Mechanical Carbs....what air cleaner?

Im looking at a set of mechanical carbs. It looks like the float adjusting nuts are offset on the mechanical carbs and will hit the stock air cleaner. Anyone have experience with them?

They're offset but that's it,they are actually lower.If you compare,the center hung casting where the adjusting nut seats it is actually 1/4" higher than the side hung needle bowl.

Buddy of mine used to have a set on his Bird and I dont think any mods were done to the air cleaner

I run a factory steel six pack Shaker hood base plate on my mechanical carbs. No fitment issues.

I made 3/8" thick aluminum spacers that go between the carbs and the aircleaner base.
Without them the front fuel line interfered with the base. That was the standard 70-71 aircleaner.
I'm a little surprised to read that the shaker base clears. Anybody know if the AAR/TA base clears?
I know that an A12 base clears easy.

I didn't have to chance anything on the factory six pack cleaner on my 440 70 Cuda. Yeah poor old photo but it was 1974 and a race car. Lol

No, the TA base doesn’t clear without some changes.
As you said, the problem is from the front fuel line fitting. The carbs came from the factory with that straight out nipple, which runs in to the front of the air cleaner base on the TA.
The way I solved it, after many attempts, was using this 90° Holley fitting. I don’t care for these because if there’s weight on them caused by fuel line or vibration of the fuel line up and down it can cause them to loosen, unless you install them very carefully. Even with this fitting I had a double gasket between the carbs and the air cleaner.
The first picture, under the air cleaner, is with one gasket. The second picture is the two gaskets. You can see it’s very close, and it gets closer when you tighten down the carb stud wing nuts.

I run individual -6AN fuel lines with banjo fittings to each carb. A straight out fuel line would hit on the front carb.

any chance of changing to the center pivot bowls ??? I run the mechanicals on my 38 but I machined and air cleaner for it .

No, you can’t use the center pivot bowls. The problem is the rear carburetor. The center pivot bowl is longer than the side pivot bowl, and when you put on the required metering block for the rear carb, it will interfere with the center carburetor.
From the pictures I’ve taken, I can almost guarantee also that a center pivot bowl on the front carburetor would hit the air cleaner and not let allow it to seat, also due to the addition of the metering block, at least on the AAR and T/A air cleaner
