You can make your own tools if you are creative. You could re-build one without any special tool but that would involve some questionable hammer and punch operations. I've seen a guy pound the mainshaft on a railroad tie to remove the bearing then whack it back home with a section of black pipe at the track
A factory shop manual is a good tool to start with because it shows what some of the factory tools look like.
