Anybody have a good how to source on rebuilding 833 4speed

Does anybody have a good how to tech source on how to rebuild a 833 4speed transmission? I dont want to buy a bunch of factory tools in trying to rebuild the transmission so I am looking for some alternative ways of getting it done with common tools or stuff a person could build.

You can make your own tools if you are creative. You could re-build one without any special tool but that would involve some questionable hammer and punch operations. I've seen a guy pound the mainshaft on a railroad tie to remove the bearing then whack it back home with a section of black pipe at the track
A factory shop manual is a good tool to start with because it shows what some of the factory tools look like.
Don't know if anybody has done a Youtube video yet I was going to make a video years ago but with the sue-happy people out there if something went wrong I would be the one to blame

I already said that I didnt want to buy any expensive factory like tools like the service manual probably wants you to buy ALOT of.

A how to tech video would have been awesome.

The FSM will greatly help you on tearing it apart and reassembling it as well as getting the clearance to factory specs.
You will need special set of pliers (Sorry I don't know the proper name of them that , maybe someone who does know that name will chime in with it ) with serrations for spreading and holding the points on the rings, that are designed to remove the retaining rings that hold the output shaft bearing on the output shaft and the retaining rings on the output shaft that hold the gears on that shaft
As far as removing the ball bearings on the input and output shafts if you don't have access to a press with a bearing removing tool PM me on here for the redneck cowboy way No damages to the shafts or bearings either

I had Brewers rebuild two of them for me. They came out looking brand new! I'm glad I didn't take it on myself as they found multiple items in each that required replacement parts beyond what a typical freshen up requires. Jamie Passon is also just as great, he restored my 3 speed manual trans, you cant go wrong with either vendor.

A pair of Lock ring pliers is mandatory no matter what but those apparently fall under the special fancy expensive tool exclusion clause because that pesky FSM does tell you to use them.

The fsm is $20 or even less on ebay and the wealth of knowledge it contains is priceless. The fsm does reference and call out using the special service tools but it also provides pictures of the tools and most can be substituted with other more common shop tools. As mentioned already it also provides the specs and directions on how things come apart and go back together.

Agree, way back when I rebuilt one on my own,
Had a lot of problem telling what to replace looking at the wear.
Ending up taking it apart a 2nd time to replace some of the bigger pieces to get it right.

That works a lot better than it sounds. And it can be reinstalled the same way you get it off - no black pipe necessary. You just need to get the bearings started square on the shafts. Works on both the tailstock and the input shaft.

I bought the "special pliers" 40 some years ago at Sears. I bet you could find them on Ebay cheap.

I made a tool to pop out the reverse shaft. A solid piece of barstock with a 90 degree bend. Long enough that the bend comes out at the end of the case opening. Used like a lever, the case edge acts as the fulcrum - you tap the end with a mallet and it drives out the shaft (which isn't terribly tight so there is no damage to the case).

Any tranny shop will press the tailstock bushing in and install the seal with the proper tools for a couple of bucks.

There are many internal parts of the A833..
We have had both Wayne @ Brewers & Jamie @ Passon rebuild transmissions for me, they have all the replacement parts and many years of experience rebuilding these. I just pay them to do it, even if I did take it on myself I would be pretty pissed if I had to take the transmission back out for some oversight..
I like to do many things myself but I leave this task to the experts. Besides they are both great Mopar guys..

When did you have them rebuild and how much did they approximately charge for a rebuild of just one transmission?

Mine needed a bunch of parts that aren't included in a typical rebuild so if you are shopping you really should call them for a baseline quote. They were really good about letting me know what they found and quoted prices on replacement parts accompanied by photos and getting my approval to go ahead before continuing.

The ad in MCG for Brewers reads: rebuild service $395 plus parts.

And would said book be written by anyone we know? Maybe the same dude who wrote an outstanding 727 book?

When I was racing my Challenger hard with a Doug Nash internal Hemi four speed I bought the snap ring tool off Gray Tools. Number is B 684 and still says $4.99 on them. I liked them a little better than the Sears pliers but both are good. If you get cold feet Pasion and Brewers are good go to people.

I ask my Son he is a Mechanic what he uses are his dealership and when he rebuilts those 5 speed SRT4 Transmission and the Viper Transmission he has in his cars and he said he likes the Snap On Pliers. Seems like there is a ton of choices for the pliers and other tools to do the job.
