Not sure if it's related but when they went to ceramic disks on big trucks in the late 70's they had solid hubs. The clutch pedal might as well have been a toggle switch. They went to torsion springs in the hubs.

I use that same clutch in all the cars. they engage very smooth. I think it has to do with the middle plate....
