I don't think anywhere in Monte's response did he imply you were stupid. I don't know Monte, but I can say from everything I read from him, he is trying to be straight up with you and let you know what to look for and help. I believe the advice he is giving you is really good. I'm with you, if I could weld, I would try to this myself, but I cant weld good enough to trust my life to it. So, I paid someone to back half my car 30 years ago.
Go crawl under a bunch of cars at the track, take some pictures, not one person has ever told me I couldn't look under their car. My 2 cents.
