No, you don't need an MSD dist. You should be using the mag pickup lead (purple/green) wired to the dist pickup wires. (Box white wire not used) You false triggered box by jumpering, and it worked, so box and coil are good. If you have purple and green switched, it just retards timing, won't hurt anything.
