I have 2003 Hemi Ram. I had a metal on metal sound and no 4 wheel drive, The Half shaft and the Diff spline on my driver side was grinding ( both worn) I'm replacing the driverside front Half shaft .... no problem. The spline which is about 8 inches is connected to the front Diff. I believe it's just supposed to pop out with some force. no need to remove the cover. I welded a chain to the old shaft and have tried leveraging it out. Question ... Is the slide hammer the only way to get that past the C clip ? Do I really have to manhandle that thing out? Thanks in advance.

Yes. They can be a pain to get out. I have never used anything but the collar tool and slide hammer, but it you can get leverage against something ( not sure id be prying against the case) and get a straight pull, it should come out. Even the slide hammer tool isn't magic. It takes some work to get it out.
