But I would like to see some info to back this claim up.

I've been around these cars since the mid 70's . And although back then nobody cared about these kinds of details ( myself included) I honestly can't remember ever seeing an oval filter element that was flat screen .

The 1972 on the labels above is 'probably' not the date the filter was produced. It was nothing more than the date the label style+color was copyrighted.
