ok because I seem to have spark at the plug in the exhaust, and when I push the the switch it kills spark to the engine. I'm assuming, here is the part where theory and realty don't seem to work together, that the motor is pumping fuel and gas into the exhaust and the spark plug is suppose to fire the mixture in the exhaust?

You're supposed to rev up the engine, THEN push the button to deactivate your ignition and activate the spark plug at the tail pipe. Keep your foot firewalled and the carb will dump raw fuel into the engine. The still spinning engine will push that raw fuel into the exhaust and the plug near the tail pipe will ignite the gasses.

Pfffft!! I had a 70 Buick that would do this without ANY mods... Sorta like the Uncle Buck car... but with fire.
