The GM 3-wire alternator is internally regulated but has an external sensing line. These are the alternators I prefer because every parts store has them sitting on the shelf. Most people just jump the sensing line to the battery connection on the alternator but it should be routed to a more remote sensing point. These alternators also need a light bulb wired in for an Alternator warning light or they won't work correctly I believe. I like having an alternator warning light because if it comes on during a run I know I lost a belt.
