Just never seen a old style pump on a new style timing cover before.

I'm running a pre '70 iron pump on an 80's 318 with the 80's 318 timing cover cuz I wanted to keep my original radiator (65 dart) and no issues. To the best of my knowledge the inside "flat" of the cover that the impeller faces is identical between the 2 covers just that the timing marks are on opposite sides. You can add an anticav plate on the vanes and mill the front of the cover to reduce the impeller to flat clearance to ~.040" or so for a much more efficient pump as part of blueprinting a cooling system but as you surmised your problem is elsewhere. I wanted to ask if it runs hot at speed or idling or stoplight to stoplight and is it a recent problem. Holler how the rad work for it turns out
