the red wire you're referring to is the "key on" +12 volts also called ignition sense so it can be powered by any circuit that comes on with the key and stays on while cranking the engine. yes it can be connected to the ballast resistor feed. the white wire is used when triggering the ignition with a points type distributor. the orange and black pair is coil positive and negative respectively. violet is mag +, green is mag -
