Absolutely correct. Not really dangerous, but once you snap the nylon breakaway pin, or trash the upper bearing, you've set yourself up for lots more work and parts-chasing.
Flaming River's setup works fine with their column (only), because it is a close-tolerance collapsible deal with no breakaway pin.
