I put about 30.000mi on my GV without any problems at all. Sold the MeanMachine last month in favour for a 64 Belvedere with 440 / 727 PB trans and 4.10 gears. Unfortunately no GV for this car due to the rear pump, otherwise I would go this route again.

As far as I know, GV changed the case sightly since then, which should give you more clearance in the tunnel area.
