Don't worry about what stroke the engine is on when installing the timing set unless you are degreeing the cam in then it will all take care of itself during the process.
If installing according to the timing gear dots position will also take care of itself.
After installation you will have to find TDC firing to install the distributor and run the spark plug wires prior to firing. Easily done by removing the number one plug and slowiy turning the engine over till you start to feel compression coming out of the spark plug hole. Then very slowly bring to about 5 degrees before TDC. Install intermediate shaft with the slot parallel with the engine center line and then install the distributor with the rotor pointing forward. Install the plug wires with the number one wire where the rotor is pointing and follow the firing order Counter clockwise around the cap.
