does muffler placement make any difference in sound or performance

im running a straight pipe off fenderwell headers and was wondering what would happen if bullet muffler was placed right after the collector then running the straight pipe. would it make it more quiet or hurt performace?

what about muffler in the midle of a 4 ft lenght and compared to it at the end

anyone try anything like this?
