muffler placement

muffler placement - 06/29/11 11:32 PM

does muffler placement make any difference in sound or performance

im running a straight pipe off fenderwell headers and was wondering what would happen if bullet muffler was placed right after the collector then running the straight pipe. would it make it more quiet or hurt performace?

what about muffler in the midle of a 4 ft lenght and compared to it at the end

anyone try anything like this?

I am not sure on performance issues, but putting a 12-24" piece of pipe after a muffler will make it a bit quieter.

wait a minute you don't believe in them

from what I have read, yes it makes a slight difference. X pipe as close to the collectors as possible with mufflers to follow. thats what I am going to do.

so you want me to run a x pipe with fenderwells? i noticed i didnt have any headaches while you were trying to pull an insurance scam

I was thinking the further away from the header you can mount the muffler the better, it gives the exhaust time to cool and the cooling gasses contract which makes less volume for the muffler.

i thought that too but think some pipe behind the muffler would help quiet it also. so thats why i'm asking

Some of the old Fords that mounted the muffler nearly to the back bumper with 6-8 out the back of the muffler were really quite. My Dad did duels on a Falcon one time and the muffler placement was at the rear on that car. He worked all day putting a duel exhaust kit on it he bought. He was really pissed when it wasn't any louder than the single exhaust.

Id of saved some $$$ for the aftermarket drive shaft, all your gonna be doing is rolling to the side of the road after it pops..

Thats my opinion too, and tech wise is correct for the reasons stated. For best results mout the muffler as far back as possible for both best performance and decible reduction.

Mine are mounted behind the rear end between the rear sub frames and the outer fenders, no tail pipe at all, straight out of the mufflers

Three inch pipes from the headers to the 3x14 oval Magnaflows mounted at the rear bumper so the end of the muff is right under the rear bumper

Nice and quiet at part throttle, not so at WOT

Was also told the farther back the better/quieter but w/fenderwell headers and 3 1/2" bullets, it`s still damn loud...........

Ray, the farther back the mufflers are from the collector, the quieter it will be.

why not just put some quiet mufflers on it

it's not like you race the thing.I still bet a good muffler shop could bend a set of X pipes for it.

Myron has some real quiet mufflers on his car. they sound good but not loud at all and he said he even picked up some ET with his. if you are going to drive a lot on the street I would want something a little quiet.
