I'm try to help a friend build a 225 slant six for a 1980 shorty van. It has a overdrive 4spd manual transmission and a 331 gear. He wants to travel In the van so has milage and easily climbing hills is a priority. I think I have narrowed it down to two cams from Oregon camshaft.

Any idea which one will get better gas mileage?

As of now the block is bored 30 over and the pistons are 190 in the hole. Haven't milled the heads or the block yet.

Heads have been bowl ported and valves have been back cut.

Thanks in advance

The first one will pull more out of the basement the second one will make just a little more power.

No point turning a 225 much over 4200 or so without Headwork and a better intake and exhaust. The tight centerline will be great for what he wants to do. The overdrive 4 speed will be perfect for it.

I'd go with the first one, you'll never see the extra 15 hp up top in with van aerodynamics anyway. The second cam would be perfect in a light car like a 64 Valiant
