that scuffing could have been from initial fire up - as in lack of oil on the skirts and possibly honing grit left in the bores. I would re-hone it and scuff the pistons skirts with a scotch brite and stick it back together. How did the bearings look that will give you an indication of a dirty assembly

More debri in the bearings than I would like to see for what is supposed to fresh.. Pan was spotless.
So I can only assume the pan has been off and cleaned.
Possibly too dry on start.
I can imagine a scenario where the cyl.s were washed down, from sticking floats, timing wasn`t right or ignition. Cranked it forever over who knows how many attempts/days before actually getting it running..
It is getting honed, fresh bearings/rings and back together.
Cheap insurance versus damaging a new block and assembly.

Sounds like a solid plan - and yes those blocks are becoming very difficult to find! This going in the GTX??

Yep,I really got a deal on it.

No ,into the Cuda`.
Haven`t had it running in 4 years.
Having a 10-point cage installed and going into the 9`s permanently.

Shopping around for a cam for it.10.77cr 330cfm heads,4.15 crank/4.32 bore.
So many choices and opinions, more confusing than a mail order bride.LOL

How are your projects?

Not an isolated cylinder so lack of oil to coat walls, metal in the oil, check the cam for wear, might have wiped and been replaced, same with lifters, "pan clean" reason you got it cheap.
I'd go for hone and new pistons-rings, thorough clean job.

Possibly.
Cam is already in the trash can.
Looks like a roller going in.
Bought it for the block.
Anything else reusable is a plus.
Has a nice set of ported 906 with big valves I need to find a home for.

I hear ya Dennis - best thing to do is ask an expert - too many keyboard advisers that never built an engine giving advice makes it even tougher!

If your going roller - I have some cam specs from that 512 I built - that might be what your looking for

The hefty just got its chassis certification good to 8.50 - it's almost ready to go - just gonna do some touch up on the primered spots - did not get a chance to do the paint this year - should be out soon

Thats not uncommon for those Ross pistons IMO.

Can you check the piston diameter right at the pin and then at the slipper tip. Kinda looks like the slipper has collapsed. Could have been some piston rock.
