727 behind a small block. Nothing special about the tranny, bolt in sprag, TA reverse pattern valve body. the 1 -2 shift is sluggish but the 2 - 3 shift is quick and hard. It seems to shift solid it just doesn't go into 2nd right when you shift...

Any ideas?

Band adjustment, broken band, or maybe something binding in the actuator piston. Could be a piece of dirt in the valve body.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

check the shifter adjustments, the pin on the cable clevis should drop into the shifter arm when adjusted correctly with no effort If it doesn't try adjusting it so it does on all three forward gears, one turn of the clevis on the cable can make the difference between working good and not shifting right
