Hey Guys,

The fuel pump on my car is letting the fuel drain back out of the carb. It doesn't want to start after a couple of days sitting. Any recommendations on who makes a good mechanical pump these days for a stock 440? I believe the one I have on it now is a Carter M4862 and about 12 years old. Really hasn't been used enough to fail.

Thanks!
Randy

Why not get a rebuild kit & rebuild it.
Try Then and Now Automotive for a kit.

Uh-huh...

(And maybe a little fuel conditioner in with the wonderful alcohol 'enhanced' fuel...

Can this happen? The fuel enters the top of the carb.

If you can find a clay smith pump they are pretty stout and are rebuildable. They are also big enough to meet the needs of the most demanding motors. They fed my 600hp just fine and I am hoping it will be enough to feed 775 I should have now.

hi

not posable for fuel to go back to pump after it enters the carb !

you eather have a fuel evaporation problem due to heat or you have a internal leak in the carb allowing the fuel to leek into the intake and cylinders !

what carb do you have ?

most, if not all of the "dry carb" after sitting a few days problems, can be traced to today's fuel just evaporating from the float bowls. very common with carter style carbs.

When I went from a open air air filter to a enclosed factory air filter the evaporation greatly decreased with my eddie carburetor.
My car sits for months at time now and starts after about 6-10 revolutions and some petal pumping with a ordinarily mechanical fuel pump.

Agree the pump is likely fine... especially if it runs OK after starting. Fuel evaporation is very likely. I have switched my carb vehicles to electric pump for this reason. Key on for a few seconds re-primes the system and starts right up. This also can eliminate vapor lock.

The carb is a factory Carter AVS. I originally thought that today's cheap gas was just evaporating, but I recently put 110 racing fuel in it and had the same problem. Carb dry after sitting a few days.

Yup, the bowl vent doesn't care what fuel is in the carb. AFB & AVS carbs evaporated back in the day, too. Usually takes a week or two of sitting. I fill the bowls using the electric pump on the cars that have them, or fill manually through the vent tubes, or just spin 'em for a bit.
They're certainly not like EFI.

Here's what works for me:

'Thick' gasket under an Edelbrock AFB...

Aluminum M-1 intake...

HP mechanical pump...

Proper supply;return;venting;gas cap...

Zero percolation issues...

Zero starting issues...

20+ years of road time, and a LOT of high heat conditions...

(ALWAYS a mixture of 110 and the pump sh!t...

Squirt bottle (small with a cap) filled with gas, remove air cleaner, pour in the front vent, replace air cleaner and start. Simple huh?

I had the same problem, so answer this. The fuel evaporates out of the carb, ok, I get that, but then tell me how the fuel in the fuel filter disappears from the fuel line all the way down to the pump?

I actually like to let it crank a bit to build oil PSI. I wont set the choke until after I get a few revolutions out of the engine.....but thats just me! LOL

OK... I have a brand new backflow preventer valve that I bought but didn't need. And I have a nearly new mechanical Racepump that I'm not using. If interested, let me know.
