I am planning on rebuilding the 440 in my truck and I have a set of 516 heads that have 1.74 exhaust valves already installed. I am curious if anyone has cc'd a set and knows what size the chambers are. I don't have the equipment to cc them myself. I am guessing they are around 80cc's? This engine has standard bore flat top pistons that are .070 in the hole and Summit's 6400 cam with .445 in .466 ex and 214, 224 duration @ .050. Running the numbers on Summit's compression calculator, gives me a ballpark figure of 9.6 using a .020 steel head gasket. It will never see anything over 5000 rpm. Also curious if anyone sees a problem with this combo for my street truck?

Any animal supply stores near you? If so a 50 CC horse syringe can be used to CC heads, with a little patience work scope That and a 5x5 inch square of plexiglass or lexan or any clear plastic works with a 1/4 inch hole in it. I use a set of head stands to put the heads in on the bench and then level the heads front to back and cock the head up so the spark plug hole is higher than the cam side of the head and some chassis grease to seal the plastic square to the head to make it hold the rubbing alcohol with food dye in it to CC the chambers up scope
How thick is the outer head bolt bosses on your 516 heads now ?

My 65 516 heads came in around 75cc when I measured them.

Cab, I don't post much, mostly lurk, but I truly enjoy reading you. You make more sense than many on here. We may have even seen each other at LACR back in the 80-90's from what you have stated in some of your history.

Cab, what kind of thickness numbers do the outer head bolt bosses run from the factory? If they are a standard size to begin with, then any deviation from that number could mean they have been cut over the years?

I've swapped 1.74 prepped 516's where 452's were and been disappointed. The cr bump didn't overcome the flow loss

Like I said earlier, this engine will never see more than 5000 rpm. I'm thinking of low to mid-range torque. I have 452's,346's and 906 heads I could use, I just wanted to use the 516's. I know they don't flow like a set of 915's would, but I'm not trying to extract a ton of horsepower from it, just torque.
