Hi guys

This is third time when my tranny needs repair and Iam tired of it. I cant understand whats wrong there...

I want to know some numbers to make sure everything is correct when I trie to rebuild it again

1. kickdown band torque : 45-50 inch-pound?
2. low and reverse band torque : 45-50 inch-pound?
3. line pressure in idle and kickdown lever closed : 51-59 psi?
4. front servo in idle and kickdown lever closed : over 45psi?
5. in idle and kickdown linkage "activated" Line pressure 88-9psi and front servo pressure over 80psi?
6. what have to be metal plates and friction plates gap in front clutch and low/reverse clutch when I install them???

I installed ( cutted low/reverse clutch drum in lathe and installed one set friction plate more in there and maybe there is the issue that those friction/metal plates are too tight and burn together ( to low end play ) ?

Thanks
Georg

the band adjustment is 72 inch pounds and back the adjuster off 2-2.5 turns

if you torque them to 45-50 inch pounds and leave them..that will kill it if it works at all, way to tight!

What Scratch said on the bands and John Russo a former trans guru on here way back stated: .008-.0012" per disc on the front clutch and .015"-.035" per disc on the rear clutch

.015"-.035" for the rear clutch is the total clearance, not the per disc clearance.

Thanks John, I copied it wrong . Is the front clutch part correct? EDIT (re)checked my notes and I had written 8-12 per disc on the front and 15-35 on the rear but I had not written next to the rear specs that that was per disc & I just assumed it was per disc. Thank you for the correction as I was going to use that on my next one

How to understand this? If I install all plates into drum, press them together and measure gap between compressed plates and drum wall?
I had much more clearance than .035" as I remeber...may this cause disks burning together?

Front is wrong, also - it's NOT .008-.0012, its .008-.012 per friction disc

Georg, as to your question about measuring your clutch clearance - I usually assemble the drum, then measure the gap by inserting feeler gauges between the top cover plate and the snap ring. You can adjust the clearance by using different thickness snap rings or steels. I do not use the wavy snap rings in either drum, but you can use in the rear (low/reverse) if you have to.

I'm not quite sure what you were trying to do with your low/reverse drum by machining it. In forward gears - once it's applied, it stays applied - it's not a shifting clutch like the front drum. 4 disc drums are common and all you need for most applications. Hope this helps.

EVIL, That's exactly what I have posted for the forward "per disc"

Your decimal point is in the wrong column - .0012 is only 1.2 thousandths - it should be .012, as in 12 thousandths. The spec is 8 to 12 thousandths.

I wasn't trying to bust your chops; just trying to get Georg the right info, spelled out in numerals. Since we express our terms a little different than he does, I was just trying to give him figures that were easy to work with.

Yeah I didn't see the decimal point error so I thought I was being jumped on for no legitimate reason. That math mistake could have been disastrous esp for Georg's 4th rebuild . Thanks for clearing that up.
