I'm degreeing in the cam for the 440 I'm building to put into my '75 Trail Duster. Its a Comp XE262 and the rest of the engine is set up for max torque down low in the rev range. This thing will rarely see anything over 5000 rpm. Looking for off-idle response. Is there any advantage to advancing the cam beyond verifying the standard Comp specs upon installation?

Thanks

Not going to find large gains.Install it 105-107 ICL and forget about it.

If you have a multiple keyway tim set might adv it 4 deg then degree it. (as you know) it'll give you the most low end and give you practice in degreeing (if you want/need practice) and you'll have the #'s generated down on paper & know that nothing has been left to chance (incl V/P clearance) and I'm assuming that you have the fuel to support the DCR you'll end up w? THEN w that finalized work on dialing in the dist one (sub) system at a time/IN ORDER: Initial/total/springs/vac adv. Then the carb (but you do want the main metering roughly correct 1st b 4 the dist) though the dist does get finalized b 4 mixture

It degreed in exactly matching the cam card at 106* ATDC intake centerline. I have a three keyway crank sprocket set.

That's good to hear & the more I think about it not sure how it'd act w it adv'd 2 or 4 deg but I'd certainly exp w it in all 3 ways (and straight up) (you have the keyways/know how to deg/want the most perf) & see & check V/P clearance at all 3 settings if you think you're anywhere near close to a prob though dist timing will need changing for each to be spot on but how much time/perfection/experimentation are you into. Holler how it turns out

That will work fine and is 4 degrees advanced as comp recommends. That cam is very small(made for a mild 350cid engine) in a 440 it will not lack for bottom end power.

So the Comp specification of 106* ATDC is already advanced 4*?

Yup, this should be a stump puller. 9.2:1 quench pad KB pistons set at .040 quench clearance with ported 452s (mild porting aimed at low lift flow), thermoquad/performer, 1 3/4" headers, single 3.5" exhaust...

106, your good to go. The 262 cam is pretty small for a 440 so you should have plenty of low end power.

Low lift flow is not a help to low rpm torque. But do not worry you'll never know unless you test it.

But low lift flow should help port velocity, yes? Which will be good for low rpm performance...

The single exhaust is a packaging issue to leave more room under the truck for a large air tank on the driver's side. But going with 3.5" should help.
