I recently adjusted the kickdown linkage on my 67 Hemi car and I have a question.

First I inserted the 3/16 inch rod, holding the transmission throttle lever all the way forward and lining up the ball stud to the intermediate transmission rod.

Then I pulled the rod out and the linkage rotated downward and the lever moved rearward about 1/4 - 1/3 of it's total travel.

Then I adjusted the slotted rod on the carb stud so that it is just touching the stud. To do this I had to adjust the length of the the rod over 1 inch out to almost the end of it's travel.

I then finished all the adjustments as shown in the service manual.

The total movement does move the throttle lever through it's full range, but it just does not seem right that the slotted rod on the carb stud should have to be adjusted all the way out or that the lever should "free fall" to a position about 1/4 of the total travel.

Thoughts anyone?

Is this a reproduction set? If so, they can leave a lot to be desired. As for the drop you mention, there is some free play at the transmissions throttle lever before it contacts the pressure valve in the valve body, that is the movement you are referring to. As for the rod being at its limit? You may have to make it up at the upper linkage.

Thanks for your reply. It is a combination of original pieces and a kit from A&A transmissions as it appears the linkage was never correct since I purchased the car.

It had a 383/440 upper bell crank and a 383/440 intermediate rod so I replaced both of them with the parts from the A&A kit. I physically measured and compared all the remaining stock parts and checked the parts book for numbers. The balance of the parts carry the same part number for Big Blocks and Hemi.

Also, make sure you have the correct transmission throttle lever for a Hemi...PN2536270. It measures 1.81(1-13/16") center to center of the holes.

I don't have my shop manual here but is what i highlighted above what the FSM tells you to do ? It's been sometime since I worked on an automatic trans Mopar with stock linkage.

Thanks 52 Savoy.

The A&A throttle lever measures 1.841 center to center.

The 67 parts book shows it as "W/ 383 and 440 cu.in. Eng., W/4 bbl. carb. and 426 cu. in. Eng., W/2-4 bbl. carbs. 2536270.

I will need to get under the car and pull off the existing throttle leaver to measure it, but I am somewhat confident that it is correct.

The original owner had pulled the Hemi out back in about 1969 and put a 383 in it to make it his daily driver. It appears that he did it correctly and replaced the 2 different pieces of the kickdown linkage, but the next owner used what was there as it did work even though it was not correct.

Thanks for all the help.

One reason I mentioned it was because Chrysler put out a TSB because wrong arms were put on some Hemis at the factory. Hope I helped..

You sure did. I will pull the existing arm and measure it for comparison.

Thanks again.

John
