I have a 1996 Neon that may have a defective PCM. Is it possible to install a salvage yard unit as long as the replacement PCM is removed from a 1996 Neon with the same engine and transmission? I have read that the dealer must flash the replacement PCM with the VIN and mileage. Is this true? If so, how does the PCM know it has been moved from one car to another? In other words, where else is the VIN and mileage information stored?

Programming vin and milage has more to do with 2000 and up. Just make sure that the computer has the same part numbers on it and you should be fine. The manual and auto cars use a different pcm.
