see below for converter pictures please

i have a 904 that was rebuilt about 15,000miles ago or so, it's been ran hard and i've been missing the small inspection plate since day one. I have some drips of atf coming from the front of the bellhousing while it is in gear, most common cause be the front inputshaft/pump seal?

I figure its that, a cracked torque converter snout (which its a ~10,000mile old Dynamic...i'd think it would be fine), or the actual pump gasket (does that really 'fail' though?

Anything I'm overlooking? Figure i should get my hands on the pump seal and start yanking the trans out. Advice?

Are there any special tools required to do just the front pump seal? Careful prying out and tapping in all thats needed?

Thanks!

you will need a seal puller will help you get the seal out, thats about the only special too you need.

yes if leaking ATF from inside the bell. hard part is seperating either the eng or trans far enough to remove the TC. You can take a screwdriver/hammer &(carefully) tap around the perimeter of the seal & drive it inward toward the center(collapsing it in other words)until it will come out if you dont have a seal puller.

thanks, picked up the seal remover from the parts store, cheap..but looks like it will do the job. taking a breather, have the rear mount and one bell bolt holding it in, so its almost out.

There is, what seems to be a hairline fracture on the snout of my converter, it is very small. I had an issue with some dripping from the front of the bellhousing when in gear, how possible is it that this is an issue?

It is a very young converter, and what would cause this?

You are lucky that you caught that , the convertor needs a new snout , not sure what causes it but it seems to be something that happens to 904s

Broke off , took out the pump and sent trash thru the entire trans .

I found one in a core pile at the junkyard , it took me a half hour to get the convertor out of it. I just needed the bolts to redo a trans I was doing a sort of restoration to .

i see where that can happen. that'd be my motivation to finally switch to a 4/5speed. Depending on dynamics reply to the situation (my guess is they'll want somewhere about $300 to fix a $650 converter), it may go back in and get babied for awhile..if it breaks, its 4spd time. No telling how long its been cracked, i hammer on it every time i take it out. Never wanted to run an auto to being with.

just do the switch now , it's out , you are crazy to put it back , besides i'm 99% that is the source of your leak , it probably is outside the lip of the seal so it's only going to leak once you put it back in .

there's a hi stall 904 convertor in the swap section

Common on 904's. If you get repaired, insist on a chrome-moly pump drive. A & A sells better front pump gears, also. IMO, I would not reuse unless fixed.

Before doing anything else I'd be talking to Dynamic... They are usually very fair...

Will this crack itself cause a fluid leak from the front of the transmission? I am going to install a stock converter for the time being and want to be 100% sure this is the cause of the fluid leak.

Thanks!
