What is correct for a 69 440HP? Recall reading repeatedly that the tube was silver CAD color and the dipstick handle was engine color. However, from the A12 reunion the Badalason dipstick handle on his 440-6 was black......leading me to believe that it should be black and the tube a silver CAD type color.....

bare steel tube with a black indicator is the general accepted rule for a 1969
Bill, it's not an accepted rule that I know of? Only for A12's. All other 383/440 motors, the handle is engine color. I don't know why but it's the way it was. I've owned when new and owned and seen many survivors. I would not hesitate to paint the handle engine color. I'm not 100% sure about the dipstick tube but if it had any paint on the tube, it was more like overspray.

I've got a picture of a 73 340 when it was only a few month old. It has an engine color tube and a black handle.
I've got a few pictures of 74 318's and the handle looks like it was bare...unpainted.
