just got dads satellite running,but the ballast is getting hot when the key on.what causes this? i put a new one on and a new voltage regulator,it was also charging wide open and the alternator is getting hot.please help!

Hot ballast resistor is normal.

so hot it burns your finger is not.dont know if its overcharging now,im done for the nite.check it tommorrow

Ballast hot enough to burn your finger is normal. It is a resisetor and creates heat just like a toaster. That is why it's mounted in a ceramic holder.

And bolted to the firewall to dissipate heat. It is normal. A five Watt light bulb will burn your fingers and five watts on your ballast resistor is low.

thanks guys.hadn't noticed that before.its charging good now.alt hand was between middle and charge with a weak battery,so should be ok once fully charged.

Make sure the field connections on your alternator are nice and tight.

And if you just happen to be using a 60+ amp alternator with an old-style mechanical regulator, be prepared for hte regulator not to last forever. That's my experience anyway...

well I have been running aftermarket regulator since 7 or 8 years now, with a variety of alts ( 78 amps running now, but 60 amps by some years ) without any problems


With a Charger born in Chrysler assembly plant in Valencia, Venezuela
