its a aftermarket sun tach, checked my ground, all the connections, made sure it connected to + on the coil. what gives?

What kind of ignition system are you running?
Some tachs jump around with multi-spark ignitions.

A tach should be wired off the - negative on the coil on stock ignition

There are some articles stating not to connect to the negative if you have an MSD setup.
