On an E body, is there a difference between a console and non-console shifter boot? I thought I've seen them entirely rise from the floor, and also a version that drops down below floor level before rising.

The 70-71 Factory Parts Book lists two different shaped shifter boots.
2996405 - Oblong
2950201 - Square

72-74 3467766 - Square - w/o center front seat.
