New 440 build with this small (460/470 lift}hydraulic cam and lifters. On cold start up lifters sound normal and then get noisy when engine warms up. Sounds like a solid lifter cam. Temp runs about 195. Oil pressure max is 80 when cold, 30 when hot at idle. Running rotella T 15W40. I see lots of complaints about valve train noise with these cams on internet forums including fords and chevys. Have any of you guys experienced this same problem and has anyone found a way to get rid of the noise without switching out cams? All suggestions and help appreciated.

Thanks

Without more info I would guess you are running stock stamped (non-adjustable) rockers and you may not have adequate lifter pre-load. Did you check? Many aftermarket cams are a smaller base-circle and can leave a non-adjustable set up loose.

Yes, the engine has stamped steel rockers. Also forgot to mention that after 100 miles of breakin I pulled the intake and valley cover to make sure the cam broke in ok. The cam is ok and and the lifters are preloaded approximately 60 to 70 thousandths. No slack in valve train and all rockers are oiling well.

Thanks,

I have that same cam in my 383. There is some valve train noise with a cold start after setting at least 24 hours, not bad, but some. After a second or two the valve train noise goes away for the most part, but there has always been a slight lifter noise with that cam, very slight because of the fast ramp of those lobes. Once it gets heated up to 180 to 190 temp the lifters are ever so slightly louder because of the hot oil. But I like the sound. Been running that cam for 6 years now without any problems.

I had the opposite problem with an XE268H. Very noisy at start up and quieted down as the engine warmed up, it took until the temp gauge was at normal operating temp.

I wound up going with a push rod that was 0.025" longer than recommended (magnum heads on LA block with the MP conversion pushrod) and that solved the problem. The valve train is quite cold or hot.

I'm glad to hear that it's not a problem! I have a XE274H in a 440 with ProMagnum rockers with the same noise. They make noise for a minute and a half, and then quiet down. I thought I had a lazy lifter or an oiling problem. I verified no oiling problems or geometry issues, re-adjusted the rockers again and the tapping is still there when it's cold. I'll just leave it alone, and sleep better at night.

dialing in the choke can clear some of that up.

there will always be some noise due to the fact that the oil has drained from the lifter. a minute of running and all should be quiet.

part of the reason a easy start is so important. youwant it to oil pressure to build and support the valve train. without alot of reving or throttling.

starting should be a turn of a key after you set the choke..
