I bought a 2004 Ram 2500 2WD regular cab with a Hemi last June. It has the 3.73 rear gear. I tow a 24 foot enclosed, about 7600 lbs. I get apx 8 mpg towing. It has LOTS of power and handles the enclosed trailer just fine from a power and suspension standpoint.
My ONLY complaint seems to be the transmission mapping when towing and in tow/haul mode. The transmission always wants to upshift into a higher gear on the flat grade. Because it is out of the power band, when you hit a hill, it wants to downshift one or sometimes two gears to 5000 rpm. It often seems like you are in the wrong gear. To prevent this, I constantly have to anticipate and tap the throttle to downshift one gear before I hit the hill. As the truck is new to me, I am hoping the dealer can adjust the shift points of the trans. A truck with 4.10s may not have the same issue.
I have not run a full tank on the highway when not towing, but I can tell you that around town back and forth, the Hemi is thirsty. In that situ, I am figuring on low to mid teens.
