I wouldnt use a hammer, but would just give the tire a few good kicks on alternating sides. Should loosen and pop right off. I've seen that happen on a few cars where the wheels went a long time without being removed and you get a rim that starts to bond to the metal behind it with a thin layer of rust.

Loosen nuts a couple of turns so that there would be some play if the wheel were loose, put in gear and lightly rock back and forth while turning the steering wheel making the wheel work itself loose. Have also seen tire stores rap inside of rim side to side with a BFH to loose stuck wheels from hub and drum.
Thanks, I'll try that tonight; I went home at lunch to give it another go and couldn't break them loose, used a rubber mallet and beat the crap out of it from both sides with no success.
I was also thinking of loosening the bolts a bit and jacking up the other side of the car to see if the weight of the car would jar it loose.
