tomorrow i will be starting a basically stock rebuilt LA360. it does have a "RV" cam but thats about the extent of the mods. my question is about the timing. when i first fire it where should i set the timing? it has a stock vacuum advance distributor nothing special. where should the initial and advance be?

After prelubing, if you don't have the stock timing specs I would start with 6-10 degrees advanced. Turn the crank so the timing mark is at the 6 or 10 degree advanced timing mark. With the dist cap off rotate the base of the distributor until the reluctor (metal part in pickup) lines up with one of the vanes on the rotor. Be sure the dist rotor is lined up with number one plug wire. Fire and go.

turn crank to 10BTDC, line up reluctor tooth w the magnet, if you set the timing chain/gears are at dot to dot (12 & 6 o'clock) have rotor under #6 plug wire, vac adv capped, dist clamp lightly snugged. When it fires & you bring the RPM up have a helper turn dist to immed get 35 (dialback or 2.214" is 35 deg). Read "breakin secrets" at www.mototuneusa.com. thermostat out, shop fan in front of rad, a helper to add trans fluid, a helper to spot leaks, you in the dr seat to monitor the gauges/shout orders. 4 or 5 pumps of fuel/charged batt/trans in neutral. Goose the throttle many times (from 2500 to higher) during the 25-30 minutes, pour some zinc additive in the oil
