Just put a new 418 in my Duster. I start it once a week or so. When it fires up you hear the normal valve trane noises. Will this eventually cause some problems over time? What I would like to know is there an oil additive I could add to the oil that would help the oil stay on the internal parts better ? Thanks for all advice.

I'm a firm believer in BG MOA. I use it in everyone of my vehicles every oil change. There is nothing better. Rick

when my last several jugs of the old rotella run out I think I will use hughes engines moly additive. No experience for or against it but from several conversations with Dave hughes in the past I have alot of respect for his sincerity & dedication to the cause.

some stp has the added zddp additives

red or blue bottle, stp has some oil stabilizer with the zddp and is added by the quart bottle

if you can find it..think they stoped,I stocked up on it last yr,got 6 qrts left

I also have gone roller cam for this reason with the oil and have gone to the napa 10/30 with the stp oil stablizer

there is..

GM eso oil additve from the chevy stealer

use some 15/40 deisel oil like the napa fleet grade 15/40 this still has a higher level of the zddp in it also

theres more snake oil out there if ya check around

I am curious if anyone here has used the PF12 machine from BG on one of their engines?

http://www.bgprod.com/products/engineoil.html

sample quote

The BG PF12 Power Flush & Prime for Engine Oil Systems injects a safe, effective cleaner into the oil system. The engine is run for 15–30 minutes during the procedure. Sludge and deposits which are the result of thermal breakdown of the engine oil by the high temperatures of heavy stop-and-go driving, are removed from the cleaning solution as it is pumped through the BG PF12 filtration system. This ensures that there will be no plugging of the engine oil system. As the piston rings are cleaned, engine compression improves, which increases power and improves fuel economy.
When the cleaning process is completed, the cleaning solution and any residual oil are air-blown from the engine. Then engine oil and BG MOA®, a superb lubricant and highly effective deposit control conditioner, are injected back into these air-blown areas to ensure instant lubrication at start-up. A new oil filter and the balance of the engine’s capacity of oil are then installed.

some of the Toyota shops have a similar flushing machine (aka MotorVac)

I’m not sure what you mean by normal valve train noises. Do you mean when the engine is cold it makes a little extra noise at start up which goes away after the engine warms up? That’s a true enough reality for most any engine. Curious, have you totally ruled out loose valve adjustment?

I’ll include some links of some products and tricks that will help you optimize lubrication upon cold (dry) start up.

Ample amounts of ZDDP in this motor oil:

moparts.com/ Amsoil AMO 10W-40 link

Also, consider an old tried and true method of lubricating your engines internal parts on the combustion side of the equation. This is done by adding a very light 500 to 1 ratio of TC-W3 rated 2-cycle oil to your cars gasoline, which equates to 1 ounce to five gallons. We all know that gasoline used to have lead, a heavy metal added to it back in the day as a means to cushioned and lubricated parts in the combustion chamber. So then is it inconceivable to think that a 2-cycle oil that is designed to not only provide a film of lubrication on parts in the combustion chamber but also burn completely and cleanly could provide similar results? This is somewhat of a controversial topic but one I’m going to give a fair shake. Check out the following link for more on this topic:

moparts.com/Tested – Radical Fuel Additive link

There are a vast number of threads here on moparts.com with the topic of Zinc, oil additives and the like, which is usually a very spirited conversation. Check out this link for an example of this:

moparts.com/Oil Additives link

I'll also provide a pdf. attachment that addresses flat tappet camshafts and Amsoil products ZDDP formulations.

Enjoy that new 418!

Proline makes a additive for Flat tappet engines that protect the valve train. They also have a additive called Heat Sink that is for the initial break in of the cam. Available from www.4secondsflat.com

how would you know there is nothing better than this? have you tested it? just because you use it doesnt mean its the best stuff out there. using it doesnt tell you didly. their blurb at the link posted above kind of sounds like typical snake oil sales talk to me

ZDDP is what you need. whether you get it from Valvoline Racing VR-1 oil, ZDDP, or GM EOS, or wherever, thats what you should run

Wynn's 50 or 80 plus...wont turn 30 weight into 50 but it is the Best viscosity stabilizer and anti scuff improver I've come across...Way better that the Lucas oil treatment
Never tried the others mentioned above

No sure what blurb your talking about . I use the Proline stuff on two 600 hp 451's that we have raced for two years never had a cam failure. Have I tested it in a laboratory No. Have the manufacturers Yes. The request was for suggestions of what we use not who can out geek the other. Just saying what I use and were it comes from .The rest of you make up your own mind.

I thought the idea was to improve the anti scuff properties. Is ZDDP the only way to do that? What about doing/looking at the actual anti scuff performance.

That used to be Bill Flynn (Engine Clean Tech.) guts in a BG case. Still looks like it. Don't see those oil flush machines on the Engine Clean website. Maybe Bill sold the rights? I thought he sold the company. I sold one a couple of years ago.
