I have a stock 440 motor. I have a original cross ram intake 3447 carters. and 286 stock heads, and max wedge repro exhaust manifolds, stock stamped steel rockers. What kind of power can I make by bolting this stuff on my motor? Will I be able to run pump gas with an additive? If I rebuild the motor what cam and pistons would be a good choice.I know I would buy forged ones. thanks in advance.

Keep the compression around 10 to 1, have hard seats put in the heads and run the .528 solid mopar performance cam. 11" 3000 stall converter and 3.91 gears would make for snappy performance and still be street friendly. Nice Car.

What would it cost to get hard seats put in my 286 heads? If I do not, will it ping to death and detonate my motor? The car is automatic and will be converted to stick. If that makes a difference on cam choice.

If those are original Max Wedge heads in good shape then sell them to someone who needs them. Take the money and buy some reproduction heads or better yet, aluminum heads with closed chambers. Then you can run pump gas and the engine will work better. You should be able to get enough money from the original MW heads to finance the parts you need.

Very good advise. Real Max Wedge heads can bring good money as many race classes say you need the right heads and many will pay good money. As Andy said sell them and get a pair of new aluminum heads (EDDY , STEALTH , INDY) that will perform better and weigh less. Unless you are building it and have to use original heads this is the best advise. You can run more comp with aluminum heads just to start. Then if you really want to run pump have a good eng builder find out how you want to use the car and have them spec out the build. I myself am building an eng right now for my 63 Sport Fury. It will be a pump gas stroker with Indy EZ aluminum heads. Ron

But Guyz ...

Doesn't MP offer good iron heads ... that now diminish the value of the older stuff ? And isn't the new stuff better ?

PLUS ... how do you get the Eddy and 440S heads to work on a X-ram?

Stealth heads are cool and all, I have a set in my garage that my coworker bought to use on his 451 but they have been ported and polished with good hardware put in them....put another 800 bucks into them at Mopar Engines West. (thanks Angie). They work great now but for a total cost of 1800 bucks......

Reason is because when they came out of the box there was a huge step on the back of the intake valve seats that you could feel and see not just something that caught your finger nail....and the spring pressures were 115 and 320 which didnt work for him.

You will have to be careful using the 286 heads. With aftermarket forged pistons in a 440 the compression ratio will be beyond the limit of pump gas. You may be able to play with head gasket thicknesses or dished pistons to lower it, but it may not be enough. Also, the original cross ram intake will have max wedge ports which will be mismatched significantly when using a stock port head like the Stealth head (unless work is done). Signature pic has the backup motor which is a 0.030 over 440, forged 6-pack pistons, 286 heads (measured at 74 cc's), 0.020 head gaskets for 11.0-1 compression.
