I need to get some new Cragars for my 70RR and I have a couple questions hoping somebody can help with.

1) I always hated the universal bolt pattern and having to mess with those goofy offset washers but are these rims safe in a higher horsepower car or using them with slicks lets say?

2) I was on the Cragar website and it looks like they make the SS rims in cast aluminum now with regular bolt patterns (no washers). Would these rims be better (stronger) than the steel versions?

Thanks,

Paul

Some race tracks frown on unilug wheels if you have a truly fast car. Years ago my brother had a set of unilug aluminum slot mags on a dart and the tech guy said the only reason they let him slide was the car was slow (16 second et). Once you get past 14.00 they start looking a your car a lot harder.

I would get the single bolt pattern ones if I had the choice just because the offest washers are irritating.

Thanks, I was wondering if there were rules about using the unilug rims. So then if I want to stay with the Cragars I would have to go with the cast aluminum versions as they don't offer the steel S/S in a single bolt pattern...I'll have to think about this now.

I have been running uni lug s/s Cragers with slicks on my 68 Coronet for 8 years with no problems. My car runs 11.50's at 115 mph. I also know of a 68 road runner with uni lug Keystones that runs 10.60's at 128mph with no problems. For saftey reasons, we run the extra long wheel studs and use the proper style nuts that allow the studs to protrude all the way through the nuts.

Run the proper stud length and you will be fine

Can you educate me on the extra long studs...are they required? I bought Moser axles for my Dana 60 and they already had studs in them so I guess they would be high strength but they are not extra long because I use a plain old chrome lug nut with my Cragars.

I really only plan on going to the track maybe twice in a year and I want to run slicks. I have a pair of the aftermarket 15 x 8 ralleye rims so if I mount slicks on those would I be o.k. with the studs I have?

As long as the stud projects through the nut you are ok.

As far as I know (bought my first Cragar S/S wheels in 1970), real Cragar S/S wheels have always had cast centers welded to the barrels. Originally all chrome, later there was a choice of a grey finish on the center.
There were some similar wheels that used stamped centers (Appliance being one of them IIRC).

I remember appliance wheels...All steel and had the 5 spoke look... Like a cragar without the aluminum center and peeling chrome.... ....Anyhow, I thought I read where the cragar SS{classic} was getting a run of the mopar/furd standard bolt pattern...They've been unilug for quite a while now...I still have an old set with the standard bolt pattern off an old charger I bought years ago and was throwing around the idea of refinishing them but it just was'nt cost effective...

Got any pics? I've been wondering about this. So you have uni-lug Cragers with nuts with open ends? Pics?

I was wondering about that as well...the diameter of my wheel studs is smaller than the slots in the uni-lug and my chrome lugs nuts have a shoulder that takes up that slack. If you use an open lug nut seems like I would have a lot of potential slop.

What I have are chrome lug nuts with the shank to take up the slack between the stud and wheel. It just has an open end to allow the stud to protrude. The brand I have are Mcgard racing lug nuts.

So can we actually get the S/S in a regular bolt pattern or are we stuck with the unilug. I would rather not use unilug. Also does some one make the 5 slot kidney bean Ansen type aluminum rims. I got a great deal on a pair of 15X10's never used never had a tire on 'em. for $85.oo Kid bought 'em for a ranger and the center register was to small . So they must be out there somewhere right?
Sorry for the high jack.

From what I see on the Cragar website the steel S/S are only sold in unilug now but they now make a cast aluminum chrome plated version of the S/S in a regular (non-uni) bolt pattern. My question about these aluminum versions are will they hold up to abuse?

Most purpose built drag racing wheels are made from aluminum. Actually a lot of the light weight racing wheels are for race use only, and not safe for street use. Driving down the road hitting pot holes and going around turns at regular speed will put more stress on wheels than straight line racing. The s/s cragers are safe for the street as long as they are DOT approved and that makes them also safe for the drag strip.
