I have a aftermarket cooler set up on my M-body. I placed it in front of the radiator-same as you are contemplating. This really is the best/safest place for these. Make sure the trans fluid outlet side goes into the aftermarket cooler first, then through the factory cooler in the bottom of the radiator and then back into the trans. This will insure the most cooling available.
Hope this helps, CC.
Curious...why that particular order? Does that simply make sure the fluid ends up cooled, yet still maintained at a correct operating temp? In other words would it be going back to the trans too cool if done in the opposite direction?
I have ben thinking about that a lot. And even though I tend to overthink simple stuff, it was one of the nagging things I keep revisiting.

I'm a lot like you in that respect. It really didn't seem to make the most sense, but I researched the Sheep out of it, and this is pretty much the best way to do it. From what I know the air doesn't do as good a job of cooling as the water does, so by 'precooling' it with air, you get a more substantial drop when it goes through the radiator. It also means there is less heat to transfer to the radiator, so the radiator itself runs cooler. And there is discussion of using a truck radiator which has a larger cooler in it than a passenger car one. This would give maximum effect.
All I know is that when I installed it the trans seemed to shift much smoother, crisper and more precisely than it did before. Noticably so....
If anyone else can give a better way- I'm all ears. It's simple enough to switch around the hoses....
CC.

he said scratch ma mopar did it this way front tranz outlet is from the pump to the lower rad cooler, out of rad cooler into the aftermarket cooler, then to the back inlet on the tranz it is at high temp comeing out of the front pump..gets cooled down to water temp/stat rateing then thru the air cooler to cool it down more then dumps it back in the tranz at the rear tranz line inlet a stacked plate cooler is better than a tube fin cooler and can be smaller for this reason IMHO the bigger the better and hook it up the way the factory did it for 30-40 yrs...they did their homework way back then too

IMHO the bigger the better
The BIGGER the BETTER ? ....on a racer ......doing that will kill stall speed.
Now on a RV or tow rig ..I would agree(on the whole). But for proper operation .... ATF likes to be quite warm.

Also, what are your positions on connecting in tandem to the "cooler/heater" in the radiator?
I installed mine, trans into radiator cooler out to external cooler back to trans.

I'm in the exact same boat right now. I'm swapping my 500 out for a 518. All new 3/8th hard line with a stacked plate cooler and a Turbo Action 17809ST converter will compliment it. I'm leaning on going the the factory cooler in the radiator, and then out to the aftermarket cooler.
LOL
I'm swapping a 518 to a 727. Me, EFI and alectronically controlled autos are not friends anymore.

I never like a ecu/pcm inbetween me and the throttle responce
i scrap the stock crap and run a points dist/pertronix conversion with a carb/headers and any tranz with noids and wires that plug in are out of there too!
I wont own anything past an 93 mopar truck
