Before I begin, cut me some slack for having power steering on this setup. Built a 493 last fall that runs pretty good, but I can't keep the belt on the PS pump at max rpm now (say 6500-7000). Belt stays on with no problems at say less than 6000 rpm, but leaves or breaks if it can't leave the pulleys at higher rpm. Does the stock PS pump on the '69 Charger 440 stall at a certain rpm? I think it's a Saginaw pump...don't have references right now, but it's the one with the oval shaped reservoir. I'm running the PS pump on a separate belt off the crankshaft. I've never had any problems with this PS pump/pulley throwing belts before I built this engine and started turning more rpm. Any help would be appreciated. Gotta figure this out before racing season is in full swing.
Can anyone confirm they run 6500-7000 rpm without losing the belt with this PS pump? Thanks.

off-hand i would say either something is just ever so slightly miss aligned or a pulley is not 100% true. at lower rpm's it's not a problem but the higher you go the more the 'issue' is amplified.

2X on what mike said. get a set of the March underdrive pulleys, plus you will gain a few ponies.

BTW, I have power steering on my 499 cuda.Love being able to have one hand on the shifter and one on the steering wheel!

Its off topic.......
Why the heck are you spinning a big block to SEVEN thousand rpms? The long stroke crank is a gift to low and midrange power without having to spin the motor to the moon. Production power steering pumps were never designed to run this fast. Even the Street Hemi cars topped out in the low 6000 range.
If you intend to keep spinning the motor this fast, maybe look into a larger P/S pulley to slow it down?

Will post pics...on the other side of the planet right now...as for the rpm, it is faster if I spin it a higher.

One other reason for the question about the PS pump itself...last time it broke the best there was PS fluid on the inner fender well when I popped the hood, which came from the vent hole in the top of the filler cap. Just seems odd.

Did the fluid look aerated or bubbly? They have newer model Saginaw caps that have a rubber baffle in the step. They don't have the vent hole arrangement like the original ones have. Maybe oil comes out at high RPM and gets on the belt and then it throws?

What kind of power steering fluid are you using?

Yep, you're right.
I have a brand new tuff stuff Saginaw pump and it has this rubber baffle thing on the dipstick in the filler cap. None of the others I have had came with this.

What kind of power steering fluid are you using?

I've been running Dexron III ATF in it forever. Thoughts?

I run to 6000 RPM with PS with no problems. I will add 3 suggestions
1. Slow the belts down. As suggested by others, get a smaller crank pulley. Stock was around 7-1 1/4". March offers a 6 1/4 and they are available down to around 5 1/4. The alternator and water pump will thank you also. I'm running the 6 1/4" which compensates for my my faster than stock running engine.

2. Get a PS cooler. The factory supplied these with 4.10 rear cars. Continuous fast running of the pump overheats the fluid and causes the burps out the vent. Generic coolers are available from Summit and others or you might find a used original. It goes in the 3/8 low pressure return line with an simple fabbed bracket.

3 Run power steering fluid. I also have run Dextron in the past but have seen enough info to indicate that PS fluid is better in this applicaiton. Since it has probably overheated, its a good time to change the fluid.

Good luck!

I'd considered slowing it with a smaller crank pulley, thanks for the reinforcement of that idea.
I'll try PS fluid for a change, and I picked up a PS fluid cooler a while back for just that reason. Had not installed it yet...
Thanks again fellas, will work it when I return.
