Just a few adjustments and this car is complete but I am stuck. 69 Hemi RR, 40 over, mild cam, auto. Everything else is stock. First off, I set the tranny kickdown according to the specs in the manual. I had the timing set at 32' and it was boggy so I now have it set at 34' and its better but the RPM's are set at 850 and they wont hold true. It jumps from 820 to 870 with and avg of 850. Will I ever get that to hold nicely on 850? Secondly, the 2 mixture screws on the rear carb. Do I crank them all the way in, all the way out, then start adjusting them together to find the smoothest idle? Whats a good starting point? Carbs are new to the car and are brand new rebuilds. Thirdly, Im not using the choke tube on my car. Do I plug that off, or leave it open for things to breathe and listen to it suck air and whistle? Sorry about the length. Eric

Eric that is not a long post (you'll see). What is your initial/prob need more initial. Float levels good (what carbs) I'm not a Hemi guy so that's as far as I can go

as far as the rear screws, you treat them like any other idle mixture screws. turn them all the way in, back out 1 - 1 1/4 turns, and then adjust the idle from there using a vacuum gauge or just going by the rpm.

as far as the choke, that may be your problem. i don't think that is supposed to be sucking air, sounds like there is a vacuum leak. the tube comes up from the exhaust manifold, and the rising heat heats the spring, which then opens the choke. i'm pretty sure that is not supposed to be sucking air. i know when i had my car i never had that line running to the choke.

someone else may chime in if i'm wrong on that.

i'm guessing that is your idle problem.

Mick, I will set the screws that way. I had no idea where to start. Without something over the choke hole it whistles like crazy. Im assuming I will have to plug it.

1 1/4 to 1 1/2 is a good place to start on the idle mixture screws. With any choke stuff disconnected...make sure it cant CLOSE when driving it!!! You'd be surprised how many cars come in my shop that can't get ot of their own way, every time you step into it they bog! 34 degrees is pretty good TOTAL advance with vaccum advance disconnected(plug the line to the carb) 12 degrees initial is good starting point. Idle won't stay perfect.
