I had the chance to drive a 02 dodge 1 ron with the cummings in it, and I must say that I was not that impressed with the power. Maybe it was just that one but non the less it was slugish on low end. Now with that said it had 97000 miles on it. I also drove a 05 ford f350 and that thing was a beast in terms of performance. I have a chance of get the ford for about 15000 grand. Was wondering if anyone has towed with one, and how what it. Its a 6.0 powerstroke. Just looking for some input before I comit to anything. Thanks guys...

97,000 mi. That Cummins isn't broken in yet. I know the power is down on certain years because of the emissions, but don't know exactly which ones.

I have a 95 3500, Cummins, 5 spd. Only a 185 hp engine. So it's one of the little ones. Wouldn't be afraid to put it up against most anything. It would hold it's own. Plus it only has 3.54 gears.

The dodge is alot more money and I kinda wanted to stay around 15 grand. I know its not a lot but its what I have to work with. My 03 with 4.7 just doesnt have the legs it use to. I'd love to stay with the dodge but this just seems like a screaming deal. I dont know, looking at all these trucks the last couple of days is making my head spin.

something must have been wrong with the truck I have had an 04 an 05 and now I have an 06 and they all had power to spear.
I pull a 35' 16000# 5th wheel and have no problems getting it moving with my bone stock truck.
I can run down the highway all day long at 80+ mph if I want to and when it is empty it will go 0-80 in a hurry for a 8000 ride.

Yeah, I must say that I was very disapointed in its performance. I cant afford a new one or,thats where I'd be heading. Doesn't anyone tow with a ford. I don't really want to by goverment motors, so its between the ford and dodge. But I'll have to keep looking if its going to be a dodge. I'm really not in a hurry to get anything but this one fell in my lap at a good price and don't know if I should just pass and wait or go ahead and get it.

6.0 Power Stroke do a google search then run far away as fast as you can!
The Cummins, no G is a beast . Go to www.cumminsforum.com to learn more. If it didn't match power with the Ford something was seriously wrong.

From personal expierience STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM A 6.0 FORD AS YOU CAN GET you have been warned had 3 different trucks that our company owned all left me on the side of the road they were serviced at all the correct intervals and never beat on injector failures out the wazoo head gaskets EGR coolers oil coolers they have MAJOR ISSUES good power when they run the last one ford bought back.I own a 06 Mega cab cummins best truck I have ever owned do your research before you buy 6.0=junk 6.4=junk warning warning warning

By the way if the prone to fail lift pump was bad on the cummins it will run like dog doo and could have damaged the injector pump this is really the only problems with 98.5-02 cummins trucks I have owned 2 of them as well

i've driven a bunch of both and even with both running right, the 6.0 Ford will outrun the cummins considerably. That being said, both again being right, will do more than enough towing most race setups. 6.0s have some serious head issues, and if i remember correctly the cab comes off to put heads on it. they also have injector issues and EGR. The 5.9 cummins is a much better motor, but make sure the lift and/or injection pump isnt on its way south with the one you drove. It's extremely common and they'll run but be waaaayyy down on power.

We just changed both pumps in our 2000 dodge.
They are very expensive.
But we have hauled some heavy stuff, and never knew it was back there!

I work at the ford dealership and they all give me grief over having a dodge truck. I tell them I drive a dodge because I cannot afford a ford and all of its mechanical issues.Shop is always full of them with lots of problems. My cummins has 166,000 on it and I have replaced the lift pump and injector pump.Other than that no mechanical issues. Mine is a 2001 and with a K&N filter and a superchips power controller($400) it is a bear. Also keep in mind you are comparing a 6 cylinder to an eight cylinder! My truck also gets 21-25 mpg empty,17-18 pulling the open trailer and as much as 14 pulling the 28 foot enclosed. If you have tons of time and money to drop on repairs, buy the ford. Otherwise you better get a dodge. And the 3.54 geared trucks tow great, thats what I have. Mine is a 2 wheel drive shortbed sport model.

Ok everyone get thier stones ready to toss at me..

I have an 05 F350 crew cab dually. It has been a very reliable workhorse for me since i bought it new. It has been back to the dealer ONCE since I bought it. That was for an FICM and that is it. Plenty of power for me and my 28' trailer that is full of stuff.

I also service a fleet of ambulances and tow trucks. They are all Fords. We have had one ambulance that needed a shortblock, two that needed EGR coolers and four vehicles total that needed FICM's or injectors. We also have 13 Dodge's in the fleet. For the most part the engines have been pretty reliable one lift and fuel pump replacement. The rest of the truck, IMO total garbage. The brakes, suspension and steering on these compared to the Fords are a joke. If you lay the parts used side by side you will see why.

I am actually wrestling with the idea of selling it and getting a new one. Frankly the prices of the new trucks scare me, plus I dont use my truck as much these days for the tow rig. For the out of town stuff we use the motorhome to tow with but the truck was used for years in that capacity. My 18 year old 5'2" daughter now drives it back and forth to school.

i had mine done at 104000 miles and it cost me $1600 for the lift pump, injector pump and the fuel filter.Lots cheaper than the constant repairs on the powerstrokes. Now the new powerstrokes are super badass power-wise(800 foot lbs)but so is the price tag!

I bought a 1997 Dodge Cummins turned up the power just a little it will pull any hill and make them flat that's only at 25 psi of boost. The 12v are easy to get insane power out of and they would be very affordable. Power stroke anything ford
The Cummins will out last the ford.

Al how many miles are on your truck ours were good to about 75k then all heck broke loose look at the resale-what your truck would actually sell for vs a 2002 7.3 equipped the same way I think you will be surprised nobody wants a 6.0

I have been looking for a tow rig myself. Before you buy in Ohio check out Cars.com and look at what is available in the Dallas TX area. Selection and prices are very good because there are so many of these type trucks there. You can easily buy a plane ticket and fly down to pick one up. The trucks are very clean from down there as well. I am leaning toward this idea.

We changed the lift pump to try and save the injector pump.
A week later the injector pump left us stranded in Indy on the side of the highway.
This was a couple weeks ago.
We put the best lift pump in at $300.
Dealer cost on injector pump is $2300
We got an injector pump for $1300
WE did all the work our self and had $1600 in it.
This is the only thing that has ever gone wrong with the truck.
They are very reliable trucks!!
