i just had my heads 440-1 done and valve job went from 2.19 to 2.25. my question is + .050 retainers were used on the intake valves and the retainers are very close to the (harland sharp) rockers .006 . is this too close ? the exh have .040 clearance betwen the retainer and rocker.

Should be fine.. I have run them that close or closer. Not much going on at that close moment. I wouldnt want them NO closer though..
Here is some close on a Hemi I finished up last summer. Not a great pic, but there were close too.

Its close but just as long as they clear... mine are
close also(maybe .010 or so) and I've been running
along time... its going to be the closest and 0 lift...
but I'm no pro engine builder so maybe wait and see
what they say(if we have any now)

With alumimum heads and steel valves with either Titainium or tool steel retainer the head will lift the rockers up higher than the valve will grow at the same temps, hence the clearances will increase between rocker arm and retainers, I think anyways

What retainer setup you running? I ended up using a shallow lash cap.. The stem on these are a little diff from the 11/32 stuff on a wedge... IIRC they are about .307-.308 diameter.
Lash caps might be a option in this application also.
Just make sure everything fits well, the locks can come in contact with the lash caps which would not be a very good thing... Just a few things to keep in mind, along with check pushrod scrub..
These things are common and I was running the .050+ setup to gain some installed height which hurts in this area for sure.

they are comp cams 10* locks and retainers the + 0.50 locks dont have the recess for the lash caps.the exh do though .wouldnt a 0.50 longer valve be a better solution while its apart ?

ok lash caps it is. i will change the locks to ones that will take lash caps. there is not a lot of choices in valve lengths out there. Thanks for the help.

Color the lash cap with a Sharpie set the lash cap and set lash roll the engine over and look at the sweeping pattern.
The .050+ retainers will NOT effect the sweep pattern/rocker geometry, neither will push rod length.. But longer valves and lash caps can effect this. As long as its pretty much centered it will be ok, if it gets close to the edge it can and will wear guides and break parts in a hurry...
Hemi's are notorious for sub par rocker geometry so I checked it (like all my engines) Its a real pain to correct if its off with these Mopar's cause unlike Chevy's Push rod length change is all thats needed with brand X engine's.
Doesnt take long to check either...
Hope this helps.
On My Hemi the pattern started just inside the stem center and swept past center a hair past full lift... Mid lift was dead center.. Not perfect but close enough in my book.
