Wondering if anyone has ever had axle tubes bend.Thought it looked like there was not as much room between tire and front wheel opening and went to pull axles out to drop third member to check things out and axle would not come out. On further inspection the housing is bent at the u-bolts. Put the housing in last season and all was good has anyone had these problems? Running 4.56 gears 29.5x11.5 slicks. Runs 1.43-1.46 60' times. 500 cid 10.0 comp. with 509 hyd. cam with 8" conv.in a 68 Dart. Is it possible I found a weak housing or am i overpowering it. If so what would be a good replacement, I really like the 8 3/4 for gear change. Thanks for any help!

Well, I should be the first one to say put in a dana 60 and forget it or if you want the interchangeability put a 9" ford under it.

I bent one up bad enough to break the ladder bar brackets off the housing, the car bent it slowly but I was not thinking of it bending I ended up putting a Dana 60 in it

Some of the 3/4 ton truck rear ends, like mine, are thicker than that I bought a junk 3/4 ton Ford rear end and had it cut down and new axles ends welded on along with reusing the old brackets off of the 8 3/4 housing

Yup, rearends bend. Need to backbrace an 8.75 if you're applying a lot of power on slicks. Dana 60s bend too, mine did after being run for 20+ years. On Danas the tubes need to be welded around their OD where they meet the center section.
The 8.75 is more efficient than the Ford 9", as is the GM 12-bolt, but the 9" is kind of the small-block Chevy of rearends as far as parts & service support. The 12-bolt is very efficient but fragile with big power & slicks.
I think most folks agree that if you want to beat on a rearend and not worry much about it, put a Dana60 under the car.

Or up to 3/8 thick for the HD....on the OP... if your
car is heavy and you launch hard you might be better
off with a 9" or a dana... I've been very happy with
my 8 3/4 but my car is light... and I run 1.19 to 1.21
60' depending on tire wear... but its back braced

I've never looked at them so I cant say... I've
always used a stock housing with a back brace and
on my old one with the 489 center I put in load bolts
to help the caps(stock ones) but you could use the
Moser cap for added strength.... I run the alum center
now days .... if you run a back brace you need to
move the shocks back a bit to clear the brace and
enough room to allow for any wind up in the rear end

Does the brace make it past the u-bolts? That is where mine is bending starting at the u-bolt closest to the center of the rearend.

You can notch the brace to clear the bolts... I run
the brace all the way out to the flange mount thats
welded to the tube... it tappers all the way to the end...
I use 2 X 3 X .125 rectangular tubing or you can
by them already made up to just weld on
EDIT
Heres a pic of my currant one
