no , there is a small 1/4 drive pipe plug behind the convertor , you pull the plug , loosen the band linkage , remove the band struts , slide out the pivot shaft , swap the lever , slide pivot shaft back in , put the plug back in and replace the stock band strut with an HD piece because that 5.0 lever will probably bend it overtime .
whats in the trans again ??

ok, looks like I will wait for a rebuild. the motor is in already.
The trans just has a deep alum B&M pan, a shift kit and a 3200 or so stall (10") converter.
I will pick up that HD strut and a good rebuild kit with some kevlar bands to get ready for a rebuild.

is the trans out of the car ? it has to be ...
John, the pipe plug can be gotten out without pulling the trans with a foot long 1/4" drive extension and a 1/4" flex socket. some of the pipe plugs are like glued in and you have to heat the plug with a torch and then it will come out. I have broken alot of flex sockets trying to get it out if it hasnt been out before,. Jim

do you need to drop the valve body first? and IS the beefed up strut really required? Or can I use the original until I can buy the beefed up strut. if I remember, I can change the strut from underneath, right?

5.0 lever is a part that was from the WAY back days--they still have it so folks order them--they SUCK! Will bend the strut soon. Put a 4.2 in and forget it.--- 5.0 levers and adjustable snubbers are junk--oh yea lets don't forget the fast ratio steering worm that you can't install (in a Mopar anyway) Man! I could get on a roll and bash Mopar Perf until suppers ready

Yes you have to drop the valvebody , no you don't have to replace the strut , let the 5.0 lever bend it so all the parts drop onto the valvebody and you smoke the front band ... then you can change it.
YMMV
whoa there nelly. im just askin. I put the motor in last night not knowing how to change the lever v(or that I needed to change the strut). Im glad I didnt cause I would have bent that strut (they should tell you that or make a note to get the stronger strut)
I was at a point where I could still yank the motor and do a changeover easily if I wanted to and if I knew exactly what I need. now I know I dont have the right strut (i found out that I didnt have the right ratio lever by asking as well)
Now I do.
I will put it off for now and leave it as is. I'll get the re-enforced strut and exchange the 5.0 for the 4.2. then when I get the urge, I put it up on the rack, yank the tranny and do a rebuild (or have someone do it for me) I want to do it right or done right- I just dont know all the details until I ask (or finish reading this rebuild handbook)

Before worrying about changing the band lever it would be wise to ascertain which lever you have now and what your needs are.
There is no reason to change the lever just because the number is bigger, if you currently have a 3.8 lever and your not making a huge amount of power I would just leave it alone.
Depending on the type of "shift kit" and band installed, that might be all you need.
