I would say that if you have significant wear on the shaft and bushing you must have a million miles on that engine or something wasn't right when it was put together. Put the bearing you want in, it'll be the only one in the world.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

What type of engine? BB- SB, Race, street?

650HP Race Engine for brackets only. My dad wants it to reduce wear. He showed me how much the bushing can actually wear into the shaft. It was pretty significant on the shaft we had so the shaft will be replaced and a new bearing will go in as well.

Sorry but I'm not understanding this... how will the
torrington eliminate shaft wear(diameter)
I'm just asking

I think Dad worries to much. With a quality shaft you can just about bet that all you will need is a new 4.00 bushing at rebuild time.

Sometimes the oil reciever groove isn't installed at the right position and can not get the propper lube it needs. This in itself causes failure to the bushing

I have seen where the bottom of the distributor drive had worn the top of the bushing to paper thin. Many times. I thought the logic to what Shephard was doing was to prevent that type of wear. Not so much as a performance gain.

Id like to know the application he is running to wear them thin. I have run about every application out there stock blocks, world block hemi's, Indy Maxx block wedge's... solid roller, solid flat tappet's etc Never had a problem wearing gears.....
Just asking.... sorry for the off topic question.. but if there is reason's good to run this setup that I can actually count on, Im all ears...
I would imagine restricted oil passages on stocker type engines could effect wear overall.

Exactly.. the bearing on the face would help in that area, the shaft still pass's through the bushing and is still seeing lateral wear. How does that work???? a cut down bushing with a spot faced machine in the block? Still need a bushing threw the bore I would imagine.

I did the conversion on an early hemi. Bought the bearing and the washers that go with it. Clearanced the bottom of the gear that amount, and was done. IMO, if the stock bushing is wearing, there are other problems. (But I had to try it)

If you are looking to mod this area, take a hacksaw blade and cut the groove in the bushing deeper and cut another one, like an x, before installing the bushing in the block. Also, lube the int shaft good when installing and you shouldn't experience those wear issues.
Just because LS does something is definitely not a reason to do it! Quite the opposite.

Good Luck
